TAG RUGBY
On 5th August 2009, St. Martin's Girls Rugby team participated in a Tournament which was held in Precious Blood Girls-Riruta. The Tournament involved three schools - St. Martin's Girls, Precious Blood Girls and Nembu Girls. St. Martin's had 35 players.
The teams were grouped according to classes - Form 1 - Three. The different teams were arranged into several pools. Each game took 15 minutes and there were 12 games in total. St. Martin's participated in 9 games and each class (Form) played at least 3 games.
St. Martins Form One girls played three games and reached the finals, beating Precious Blood Girls with 3-1 and got 15 points. Form 2 girls from our school played 2 games, made it to the Semi but were beaten by Nembu Girls 2-1. The Form 3 girls (my class) played good games all through. We reached the finals and though we played hard, we were beaten 1-0.
At the end of the game, there was alot of excitement, singing and celebrations. We all assembled and Coaches and Referees talked to us. They commented on St. Martin's - that our players are among the best and said they see a bright Rugby future for us. We were also vouched the most disciplined, a virtue we have as St. Martin's students.
The winners will receive trophies from the Kenya Rugby Federation Union. It was a very exciting experience and we did our school proud.

BLACK ROCK CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ST. MARY'S SCHOOL NAIROBI
St. Martin's girl's school got a rare invitation by the rugby football union-RFU to participate in the Black rock rugby competition. The team arrived at st. Marys school at about 10.00am accompanied by the Deputy principal, Mr. Nyandieka, Mr Martin(Salesforce), Mr. Kimeu and Mr. Kihoro. The principal, Sr Florentina Ndeke joined the team later and witnessed the Bowl finals for st. Martins school
There were 12 teams for the competition from six girls schools, Precious blood Riruta, Nembu girls, St. Theresa Girls, Hidden Talent academy, Maoni school and St. Martins Girls.
At the preliminary stages there were 3 pools with each pool having 4 teams. The games at group stages were played on round robin basis.
The number ones were pooled to compete for the main cup, number twos for the Bowl and number threes for the shield. Since both St Martins A and St Martins B were number twos from their group stages they were out to compete for the BOWL.
St. Martins Team A lost to Nembu A at the Bowl Finals. The team was very elated since they had known and trained in Tag rugby for only five days
Kudos to the sales force team of VIJAY, MARTIN, AMANDA, ISABELL JOANNA, STEPHANIE and DEANNA

Science
In March 2009, St. Martin's Girls participated in the Kenya Science Congress. The Girls were in groups of 11 students and they made presentations. Three groups won in this at Zonal Level and will represent the school at the Provincial Level take place end of May 2009.
The following Projects were presented:
1. Physics Talk 2. Technical Talk 3. Agriculture Exhibit
1. PHYSICS TALK - From this year's (2009) Science Congess Theme "Science and Technology for Environmental Improvement." We, SylviaMary Mwangi and Beatrice Kioma, both in Form Four, came up with a unique Project that would help reduce air pollution mostly from the Industries that produce harmful gases; an example is KEL Chemicals in Thika.
The Tile of our Project was "Modern Improved Chimney." The chimney uses an electrostatic precipitator which would be charged (5000V). The principles involved are electrostatic law of charges and Bernoulls principle at the bottom where there is high concentration of burnt gases, the chimney has a narrow diameter of 1 metre to ensure that Velocity is increased and pressure reduced.
After 2m height, the diameter is increased by 1 to ensure that pressure is increased and velocity decreased (Bernoulls principle) . As the gas gets into the chimney, it is ionised thus attracted to the copper plate which is negatively charged and the zinc plate which is positively charged (this is what makes the electrostatic precipitator). The negatively charged particles will be attracted to the negatively charged plate and positively charged particles to the negatively charged plate (electrostatic law of charges).
This ensures that no gas gets into the atmosphere and if any, there is an inlet created at the top of the chimney to allow Ca(OH)(aq) to be pumped in to scrab the escaping gases. For the chimney to work efficiently, it is cleared oftenly and also charged. This projects improves the environment conditions and saves the country a great deal of expenditure.

Updates from the students
This area is for the monthly newsletter for the sponsors. Maybe the girls can take it in turns to write the material?
Tag Rugby
May 2009: Tag Rugby comes to St. Martin's
The girls and teachers were introduced to Tag Rugby with the support of the Tag Rugby Developnent Trust (TRDT). A group of volunteers from salesforce.com joined members of the TRDT to teach the students and staff the rules of the sport.
The activity took place on the school's football pitch and included all the students, teachers and some past pupils. Over the course of the week they all learned the rules and skills of the game and participated in a tournament on the final day. The members of the winning team were: list names.
The TRDT has donated the tag rugby kit to the school and it will become a regular part of our sports activity for the whole school to enjoy.
